....And a fucking brake line blew out. Never mind the fact that I’ve been having electrical issues since Thursday night (radio, dome light, and cigarette lighter all quit working. I know what the problem is, I just don’t know if I can fix it), now I can’t even drive the damn truck.

I don’t know what to do. I’m emotionally attached to it, big time. I don’t want to get rid of it, but if it keeps up like this, I won’t be able to drive it. My parents won’t let me just put it aside for a project truck, either, which I understand, I really do, but again, I’m too attached to it to just get rid of it.

Sorry to hear man. I would still have my Expedition if my dad didn’t sell it before I had the funds to buy it. Sometimes you have to let go and just take the memories.

That said what is the electrical problem? Brake lines aren’t enough to sell a truck in my opinion. They usually aren’t a huge expense to get new ones put on. Are there other issues with kipper?

There’s a power issue somewhere between the battery and the radio, and the wire splits off and changes color a few times. It’s not the brake line itself that scares me, it’s that it’s all happening at once. Those are the only two problems, really, other than the (non-structural) rust, and a slow leak in the front left tire.

That all sounds like pretty manageable stuff. The trick is to knock ’em out one at a time, before more things get added to the list and it gets to be overwhelming.

Obviously, that brake line takes priority... I’m guess it’s a hard line, not a hose?

That doesn’t sound too bad. I don’t know much about wiring but maybe look on forums to see if there is a common weak spot in the electrics to the cab. Or check behind the radio since that should be easy to see if its were the wire connects to the radio itself.

Yeah, it’s a line. I’m probably freaking out over nothing, it’s just that Dad and I cannot do wiring. We have no experience, I’m 17 and I haven’t gotten a job yet so I’m broke (paying for insurance with savings from money I got for Christmas over the years)

1. My Dad used to build those Expeditions. I think he worked in the trim department.

2. I don’t know wiring, either, which is the problem, and the internet’s been no help.

How much of the line has to be replaced? Do you think you could get away with splicing in a new piece, or is the whole length looking pretty rusty?

The brake line? I don’t actually know. I haven’t looked at it. Dad did, and I hadn’t thought to ask him about it.

Brake lines are actually pretty easy if you use something like NiCopp instead of steel (which is just gonna rust again anyway). Routing can be tricky sometimes, especially if you’re replacing a whole line from one fitting to the next, but if you’re going to be doing any splicing, you definitely want to use flare fittings and not the compression type.

I actually have some spare NiCopp lying around, but you’re a good hour or so away, so getting stuff from the parts store would be quicker for you...

I’m going to talk to my dad about what to do when he gets home from work.
